Description
The idea of a comforter was inspired by sitting out at night listening to the owls and watching the stars when we first moved to West Cornwall. I would grab a metre long length of finished cloth that was a sample of a new design that I had kept close at hand as I was particularly fond of it, and wrap it around my shoulders. It was lightweight, not too bulky and I didn’t end up trailing it around in the dewy grass. Most of all it kept the wind out and kept me deliciously warm. And so, was born, the comforter.
It’s basically what our wise old grandmothers and great-grandmothers would have called a lap blanket, or lap rug. I think of it as a one person throw, comforter or security blanket. Big enough for one person, I often use mine to keep snug and warm when walking to our local pub of an evening, and to cover my knees once seated. Its been a picnic rug, a dog blanket, a baby blanket… and so on. It’s quite a long list. And of course, to sit by the fire of a winter’s evening.
The star pattern is inspired by old North European (and therefore also English and American) patterns that have been handwoven for hundreds of years.
It’s a very peaceful and cottagey design, pretty and traditional.
This being the North Star version, perhaps you too would like to take it on a moonlight walk to throw around your shoulders. What ever you decide to do this wonderful object, handwoven in West Cornwall in a studio overlooking the land and sea, it is going to capture your heart.
And because it is made of lambswool it will absorb the damp night air and keep you warm too (wool can absorb up to 30% its weight in water before it begins to feel wet, and the energy produced in doing this makes it warmer too – a double score on the cosiness scale).
